Biography: Mr. Shimokaji specializes in the resolution of patent, trademark, and copyright disputes throughout California and nationally. He brings more than 30 years of experience to the resolution of your disputes – as a mediator. His legal expertise includes the litigation and trial of intellectual property, general business, and personal injury lawsuits as a partner in Southern California based law firms.
As an insurance defense lawyer, Mr. Shimokaji worked with carriers that included Allstate, Mercury, Progressive, Reliance, State Farm, and Tokio Marine. He defended matters involving auto, premises, and product liability. In the auto area, Mr. Shimokaji’s practice focused on SIU cases. In the product liability area, he represented companies that included Kawasaki, Isuzu, Mazda, and Nissan.
His dispute resolution training has been through the world renowned Straus Institute.
Mr. Shimokaji serves as a neutral for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Orange County Superior Courts, and the US District Court, Central District of California. He has similarly served the Los Angeles Superior Courts.
In the personal injury area, Mr. Shimokaji mediation work has been in the auto and premises areas.
Mr. Shimokaji has been a member of the Steering Committee for the California Minority Counsel Program. He was a founding director of the Orange County Japanese-American Lawyers Association and has served as an instructor in the paralegal program at the University of California, Irvine. He served for three years on the Executive Committee for the California State Bar Intellectual Property Section, and another three year term on the California State Bar Federal Courts Committee. Mr. Shimokaji has been a member of the editorial board for The Journal of the Association of University Technology Managers.
Following graduation from the University of California, Irvine with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Mr. Shimokaji received his Juris Doctorate degree from Southwestern University School of Law. In law school, Mr. Shimokaji was an executive editor for the school’s law review. He has served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Robert M. Takasugi, Judge, United States District Court. Mr. Shimokaji is admitted to the California Bar and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
